April 2024

Aaron presented a poster of his PhD project work at the BSDB/Genetics Society joint spring meeting 'Developmental Genetics' at the University of Warwick.

Nick and Ethan attended the one-day meeting 'Light-sheet in Action: structural and dynamic microscopy from cells to animals' at the Crick Institute, London.

Sarah gave a talk on her research project on the role of Bmper in development of the zebrafish embryo at the School of Biosciences 'Building Tissues' seminar series.

Tanya gave a talk 'Adgrg6 in the zebrafish: development, disease modelling and drug discovery' at the final meeting of the Adhern' Rise COST Action on Adhesion GPCRs, held at the Institute of Organic Chemistry and Biochemistry of the Czech Academy of Sciences (IOCB Prague), in Prague, Czechia.  Many thanks to the organisers for the opportunity to speak and for an excellent meeting.

Tanya also gave a seminar at the Department of Physiology, Development and Neuroscience (PDN) at the University of Cambridge, hosted by Professor Clare Baker, and spent a very enjoyable day there discussing epithelial cell dynamics with members of staff, postdocs and students.

March 2024

Ethan has been making great strides in building a light-sheet fluorescence microscope over in the Department of Physics and Astronomy.  The microscope is now ready to start imaging zebrafish embryos.  Ethan presented a poster of his PhD project work at the Focus in Microscopy (FOM2024) meeting in Genoa, Italy.

Aaron attended a two-day Adhern' Rise COST Action training school on visualisation and analysis of protein structures at the University of Oxford, where he gave a flash talk on his PhD work.

February 2024

Ethan, Sarah, Ashley and Tanya visited the the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research in Leipzig, Germany, to see automated zebrafish embryo sorting robots in action, and Tanya gave a seminar on the lab's drug discovery and ototoxicity work.  Many thanks to Stefan Scholz and Riccardo Massei for hosting us!  We had a very enjoyable visit, and made sure to include time to sample coffee and cakes in town:

Tanya also visited the lab of Ines Liebscher at the University of Leipzig to discuss work on Adhesion GPCRs.

 Happy New Year!

Tanya presented a poster of the lab's work at the 10th Strategic Conference of Zebrafish Investigators, held at the Asilomar Conference Centre, Pacific Grove, California.  She then travelled north to Seattle to visit labs at the University of Washington, and gave a seminar to the Fish Club there.  Many thanks to Dave Raible and his lab members for hosting!

The C21 labs celebrated the festive season with a pub lunch and White Elephant gift exchange.

Happy Holidays!

November 2023

The lab took part in BioFest 2023, a 3-evening public engagement event and celebration of research in the Biosciences at Sheffield.  We displayed images and videos of our research, ran quizzes, and got everyone drawing a giant image of the inner ear!

Nick and Haseeb attended the Crick Bioimage Analysis Symposium and napari training workshop, held at the Francis Crick Institute, London.

Tanya attended the Stem Cell Fate Choice: Mechanisms and Modelling meeting at the University of Bath.

October 2023

Many congratulations to King Yee Cheung, who gave an excellent pre-viva talk on her PhD project on olfactory rod cells, and successfully passed her viva.  King has recently completed two busy and productive years of her A*STAR-funded project at Nanyang Technological University in Singapore, supervised by Suresh Jesuthasan.  Many thanks to Freek van Eeden and Nathalie Jurisch-Yaksi for examining!

A warm welcome to Ethan Giles, who starts his PhD with us, jointly supervised by Ashley Cadby in the Department of Physics and Astronomy.  Ethan comes to us with a BSc (Hons) in Biochemistry from Sheffield Hallam University, including an Erasmus year abroad in the lab of Juan Bolaños at the University of Salamanca, Spain.  Ethan's project is funded by an EPSRC Neuroscience Institute Studentship.

A renewed welcome to Aaron Bailiff, who is now starting a PhD with us as a staff candidate, funded by the Wellcome Trust.  Aaron also graduated from Sheffield Hallam University with a BSc (Hons) in Biology, including a year's experience working as a Research Assistant at the University of Sheffield in the group of Heba Ismail.

We enjoyed an excellent series of talks at the Autumn Bateson Centre Symposium, and Tanya also attended the 3rd iGPCRNet meeting (online).
